Chapter Nine

Charlie rested his palm on the cyclic. They’d be at their target very soon. For most of the trip, he’d focused on planning for the upcoming mission. They’d activated the helicopter’s noisy intercom system and engaged everyone in a group discussion. Or as Roy called them: group gropes.

Frank had been less than pleased to discover he and Tony would be assigned to locating the drug. His point—and it was a solid one—was that if the two of them were going to be a team, they should’ve flown together so they could strategize. Roy had come up with something placating about Frank and Tony having so many miles under their belts, they probably didn’t even have to talk much anymore. Surprisingly, Frank agreed, and that had been the end of it.

Whenever Charlie wasn’t engrossed in details that read like algorithms—if A happens, we do B. If C happens, we do X—his mind turned to Hope. He hadn’t slept well, mostly because it took all his self-control not to return to her apartment and pick up where they’d left off. With her in his arms and his mouth glued to hers.

Seeing her on the flight line this morning made him want to run to her and hug her, but he hadn’t wanted to make her uncomfortable or create any kind of grist for the gossip mill. Relationships came and went between agents, and he vowed this wouldn’t be just one more flash in the pan sexual fling.

No. This was the real thing, and he didn’t want any of the men giving him a hard time or seeing her as an easy target. She wasn’t. She was his, goddammit. His. Maybe he could find out where that hideaway in the San Juan Islands was and make reservations for just the two of them. It was run by a couple of retired agents who understood the value of privacy. Charlie had never wanted to bring anyone there before, but now he did.

“McClaren!” Roy’s voice held a sharp edge.

Charlie’s head snapped up. “Yeah? Sorry.”

Roy narrowed his eyes. “What’s gotten into you? I said your name twice before you finally heard me.” Charlie opened his mouth, but before he could get any words out, Roy went on. “Is something bothering you? If it is, now would be the time to get it out on the table. We’ll be in the thick of things soon, and I need you at a hundred ten percent, not mooning over God knows what.”

“I’m good.”

“I’ve known you for a long time. You sure about that?” Roy skewered him with astute blue eyes.

“Double damn sure.” Charlie reached across the narrow aisle between the pilot and copilot seats and punched Roy’s upper arm. “Let’s do this.”

So we can get back to Langley, and I can take Hope to dinner like I promised.

“What the hell,” Roy muttered. “I tried.”

Charlie could’ve picked up the gambit, but he didn’t. He’d told Milton. It was enough. For now. Last thing he needed was a Dutch uncle lecture from Roy, who had indeed been there and done that.
